Fishing Gear Tips and Advice

About Me

Hi, my name is Joe. I have been fishing for close to 50 years. I like to fish for all kinds of fish, whenever and wherever I can. Let me tell you a little about myself.

I was raised in Washington State with the Columbia River right in my back yard. I spent a lot of time hanging out on the river and fished whenever I could which was quite often. I love being by the water. During the summer I practically lived on the river.

I have to credit my dad for taking me fishing when I was young. He loved to fish and it rubbed off on me. I remember as a kid looking forward to Opening Day of trout season. It was an annual event that we planned for well in advance.

We would leave home Friday night so we could get our favorite spot on the lake to camp. Opening day wasn't until Sunday, so Saturday we would fish nearby for bass or perch or whatever was biting. We would usually target something different each year.

I now live in Arizona and am fortunate enough to be able to fish all over the western United States, British Columbia and Mexico for many different kinds of fish.

Now I spend most of my time fly fishing for trout in Arizona. Depending on the time of year I might go after bass, crappie or catfish. I make frequent trips to Mexico for some excellent largemouth bass fishing. At least once a year I get up to Oregon to go fly fishing for steelhead. I've made a few trips to British Columbia for some of the best salmon fishing you'll find anywhere and hope to return there soon. Whenever I travel I pack my fly rod just in case I can get some time on the water.

I like learning new techniques and strategies for different fishing situations. When fishing a new area I try to hire a local guide. They can definately show you the best spots and give you tips for the area and what works best. Look online or ask a local tackle or fly shop for a list of guides in the area.

As you can imagine, fishing for such a variety of fish would require a lot of fishing gear. I must admit I have accumulated a lot of gear over the years. I still have my dad's favorite fly rod. A Shakespeare Wonder Rod from the 1950's. I also have a large collection of antique lures and plugs.

I am always on the lookout for new fishing gear as well. I look forward to my favorite manufacturers new lines that come out each year. I'll check out everything from spinners to fly rods. It seems my arsenal of rods, reels and tackle is always missing that one piece that would make it complete.
