Fishing Tackle - Monofilament Line

Monofilament Line - Your Best All-Around Fishing Line

Most fishing is done using monofilament fishing line and for good reason. Monofilament is inexpensive, durable, and abrasion resistant. Because of its limpness and flex you are able to cast far and accurate. The stretch can be helpful as it provides shock resistance from sudden violent strikes.

There are many things to consider when picking a monofilament line. First and foremost is the strength, measured in pound test. This is the dry weight the line will hold before breaking.

Line diameter is important as it will affect spool capacity and wind resistance. I would suggest getting the smallest diameter for the pound test you're looking for. Diameter also affects trolling depth. The thicker the line, the more weight you need to get your line deeper.

Color is a consideration as well. Sometimes you want a line you can see for casting precision as well as being able to detect bites. Other times you might want a camoflage line that better matches water color.

Elasticity or percentage of stretch is often described as limpness. The more limp your line, the easier it is to cast and store on the reel. This is due in part to the lack of 'memory' which allows your line to straighten as it comes off the reel rather than coming off coiled.

There is a disadvantage to having a limp line though. Due to the amount of stretch, bites can be harder to detect especially at greater depths and it could also affect hook sets.

Monofilament line is made by combining over a hundred different types of plastic resins. The variations provide the qualities the manufacturer is looking for. These could be extra limp to extra tough.

Maxima Ultragreen

maxima-ultragreenThis is the original green monofilament. Though often attempted, no other manufacturer has duplicated the exclusive color and characteristics of Maxima's Ultragreen. This line becomes virtually invisible under water, particularly in fresh water and inshore coastal waters. Ultragreen is also soft and limp, yet retains Maxima's legendary tough, high durability finish for excellent abrasion resistance. Ultragreen is the best all-around line for a variety of freshwater and general saltwater fishing, spooling and casting well on spinning, baitcasting and larger conventional reels. Ultragreen's invisibility under water also makes it ideal for leader material.
